Ive just got another 1/2oz one last month from MW. Ive been having so much fun and success with these lures. So now I had a 1/2 and 1/4oz lures. My setup consist of a 10' ultra ugly stick with a penn 550ss loaded with 30# power pro. I tie the lure straight to the line but after this experience I'll probably go with either a 20# mono leader with a GT knot or just a snap swivel.
Well, my story is...I was whipping with my cousin on the backside of Turtle Bay Hilton (a regular spot for us) when I got a big hook up right in front of the swimming pool side of the hotel. I was using the 1/2oz oama and after about a 20 min fight I got it close enough to where we could see the fish. My cousin estimated to be about 40#...getting it close enough to touch I am really considering on getting a gaff...lol. The ulua made two more big runs, taking 3/4 of my line. When all of a sudden the pole went slack, for a minute two things ran through my mind...1. the fish is heading towards me or 2. the worst thing: the lure popped out. To my dismay it was neither...the line snapped. At that point I was excited, disappointed and upset all at the same time...lost my lure
So after laughing for a bit with my cousin I tied on the 1/4oz oama. We continued to walk around the hotel casting where we could and I picked up to small omilu around 2-3#. We decided to walk back towards the spot where I lost my ulua and lure. Oh, I should tell you that this 1/4oz lure Im using I just put on a new hook courtesy of MW. After about 4-5 cast BINGO....another huge strike. This one felt just as big as the first one....I'd gain line, then a big run...this went on for about 10 min but I couldn't get this one close enough to see. Then low and behold...SLACK...I yelled NO!!! So I started taking up my line but could feel the weight of the lure so I thought "whew, at least I still got my lure". So I though...when I pulled the lure out of the water I noticed something interesting...no feathers behind the body of the lure. After carefully examining the lure I noticed that where the hook came off is where I'm guessing I didn't crimp the wire tight enough. This was a good but sad day. had some good fights, picked up a couple of omilu but lost my MW lures
Just a little story I wanted to share with all you MW lure users. Oh, my cousin got a couple omilu's as well with his MW lure. So those of you who are reading this but haven't tried any of MW lures. I have to say this would be the best $20 you'll spend. >
