First fish I've caught with these lures. Had about 5 strikes and managed to bring in these 3. Didn't weigh them but I'm guessing they're about 2 lbs. Never would have thought that a moi would bite these things.

Excellent catch!!! Lucky you, just got in under the wire. Moi season closed June 1st till Sept 1. What kine retrieve were you using and was it sand only or rocks mixed with sand. Mahalo for posting! m

Yes, just got these guys a few days before the season's end - so stoked! Retrieve was slow and steady, making it swim just under the surface similar to the video of the Oama lure. Not much luck with the fast retrieve. The area I was fishing is all reef. There's a channel running parallel to the shoreline where the moi pass through. I was whipping it over the channel and the moi would come up and attack - seriously attack the lure and take swipes at it until they got it. After catching these, the school probably got smart and left. Next day I got a smaller one which was released (seriously) but the conditions were too rough to effectively work the zone.

Hey,
That some nice looking fish that you got there. Never seen any like this before, I don't think that we got them down here. Are they good to eat?
Have a good day, Pecheur

Hey,
We got a fish called King fish too down here, but it is not the same... Different kings different fishes I guess...
Was this fish really reserved for the king?
We also have one called Queenfish. But no Prince or princess fish... The kids must be starving...

I believe you folks have a fish similar to this. I think you call it a Threadfin Salmon. Looks pretty similar. I remember seeing people catching these on TV and they were 10 - 15 pounds. Not sure if they were eaten but it was amazing to see. If you caught a 10 pounder here in Hawaii, you'd be a legend.

Hi Trm332,
Yes it look like a Threadfin Salmon, but the colours are a bit different, so I am not sure that it is exactly the same specie but it could be. Sometime variation (Colours or size) happen in the same specie depending of the location of the animal.
The Australian Threadfin is considered as a very good fish to eat, and people often catch then while fishing for Barra, or target them deliberately.
Here is a video from youtube about one of our local gun catching one of them.
But he makes it look like a special thing, and I believe that at least 95% of people who fish in Darwin have caught a few of them without too much trouble...
It is show business after all...
Down here there is no season for them, you can fish for them all year long. But when it is the jelly prawn season they are very hard to catch, because that is almost the only thing they will eat. It is interesting to know that you guys have a season for them. Is that during the matting season?
Have a good day, Pecheur
P.S: If you look at the video "Amazing quenfish strikes" from the same guy, you will understand what they are my main target...

Its a way to protect them as in overfishing because in hawaii these are VERY good eating fish and people can abuse bag limits, size limits etc so there is a few months set aside for them to reproduce.
