What are the signs?

In my quest to go from "Newbie" to "Is what I'm doing called fishing?" and get more hook-ups. I know I got a ways to go as far as using more retrieving patterns/styles. I'm wondering what should I be looking for when looking for the best grounds. I whip 1/2 oz'ers on 8lb mono so I've been fishing grounds that are up to 20ft deep, rocky and/or has a drop-off. I love to whip from sandy beaches (although my hook-up rate is probably the lowest there)...lol. What say you? Mahalos \m/

I do use a 20lb mono leader spliced to my 8lb mono. I did go to your site and found a vid or 2 that shows some retrieval patterns. Happy Holidays!
