travel gear for a newbie? Empty
PostSubject: travel gear for a newbie?   travel gear for a newbie? EmptyFri Dec 02, 2011 1:42 am

Hi Mark, Jay here, the guy who's been bugging you on email!
I just got done watching a bunch of your videos.. and WOW!

Questions.. I'm going to be in Ka'anapali 12/10-16, around
the Westin-Kaanapali Beach Club area. I think I'm going to
buy a few of your 1/2oz lures, mainly because this is what
I'm bringing:

Cabelas 7ft 4pc travel casting XML rod. M/F. 8-17line, 1/4-5/8 lures.
with an Abu Revo Toro 50HS reel.

I have pretty low expectations overall, just because I'm from
the mainland, and I don't
really know what I'm doing! Also, others have said this time of
year, I might do better with grubs and squid or shrimp, floats,
etc.

I'm assuming this Revo Toro should be fast enough for the retrieve?
What about the rod? Your videos, it looks like your rods bend A LOT..
are they all M? What action?

I was also wondering why I don't seem to see video or any
mention of baitcaster reels in Hawaii? Is there something unique to
spinning reels that make them more suited to whipping, plugs, or for
using your ceramic lures?

Ok.. thanks again for all your great advice and emails.
Looking forward to the trip.

Hi docrunner, fast retrieve reels are best for my lures. 6.0 is ideal. I have no experience with baitcasters, although some of my friends use them with the 1/2 oz.ers. I use 10' rods and sacrafice fish control for ease of casts. I let the rod do the work. All rod manufactures have different ratings so I'd say they medium or lighter. Good luck and safe trip, m
